Boogiepop wa Warawanai – New arc, maybe some improvements?
Sword Art Online: Alicization – I’m slightly mad.
Dororo – Lots of prosthetics.

I probably haven’t talked about it before, so I can tell that my story with Boogiepop franchise goes like this. Since I heard that there’ll be a new Boogiepop anime, I decided to finally pick up the light novels. Simply because some regard the franchise quite highly, and dipping a bit in anime (and associated media) history is never a bad idea. (Unless you get stuck on some CG of early 2000s.) Anyway, as always, procrastination did its job, and I barely managed to read the first volume before starting watching the anime. Now, the first arc that was covered in that volume, is already finished, so it’s time for the second one. I can’t say that I caught the train before it even started moving, but still – I think it’s a valid idea to post my impressions of the novels before digging into the adaptation. So, here it goes.

Show, don’t tell. That’s probably the most important rule of any film or TV show. Instances like Bakemonogatari are very scarce, and even there the visuals are not the least important element of the story. It seems like the easier route is to stick to the rule and avoid exposition dumps as much as possible, and then it should be ok. It’s true that the new adaptation of Boogiepop light novel series doesn’t tell. Only the problem is that neither does it show.
It’s a very unforgiving job to try to adapt Boogiepop. If you watched any of Junji Ito’s anime adaptations, you should know how that sort of thing may play out. It’s just that another medium isn’t always capable of retelling the same story without some important pieces being lost. A non-conventional retelling might do the source justice, but so far Boogiepop wa Warawanai has received nothing but conventional adaptation, and it doesn’t really work. Why?

One phrase impressions
Boogiepop wa Warawanai (Ep. 1) – Underwhelming to say the least.
Boogiepop wa Warawanai (Ep. 2) – The story sort of kicks in but also sort of doesn’t..
Sword Art Online: Alicization – Ugh, exposition upon exposition…
Dororo – MAPPA knows how to deal with historical anime, apparently

Baccano at this point is regarded as a milestone in the history of the medium, be it light novels or anime. The energetic chaos of intertwining stories of many characters definitely is very entertaining, if only you can keep up with it. The truth however is that almost nothing pops into existence out of a vacuum, and Baccano isn’t an exception to that. If you think of it as an outgoing youth full of craziest ideas, you should also know that it has a grandfather – older, calmer and usually more grounded in reality. What’s that you ask? Why, but that’s Boogiepop.

A new year, a new season, a new hope. The last winter proved to be incredibly rich with a number of great shows that could be enough for the entirety of a pretty decent year. This time I’m not as optimistic, but the selection is still varied enough (even with the heap of second seasons and stuff). I guess I’ll be rather cautious this time but at least one show should be definitely good. I hope.

Yeah, the final post of the year, no matter that it’s already 2019. It’s hard to remember all the things that happened during the last 12 months but it seems like the year was eventful enough, with all the appropriate ups and downs. For example, finally getting your driver’s licence doesn’t happen that often (I hope), nor taking a break from reading posts (I also hope that). As with some previous years, I took a look in MAL and what do you think – 14 anime of 2018 now have a place in Top 100. In 2016 the number was 16, and in 2017 – 15. It would be fun to make a probabilistic prediction until when Cowboy Bebop will remain in the list. I guess there’s still some time until the list is completely changed, since after two years there’s only 9 2016 anime left. Still too much for my liking though. The multitude of Gintamas doesn’t deserve so many high places, at least in my book.

Yeah, not much to talk about this Fall season. At least for someone who has been not the most active person around. Yeah, other stuff occupied me quite a bit, and episode reviews (and even them late) definitely weren’t of the highest class. Deliberately wrong choices during the start of the season (yeah, I’m a completionist) didn’t make the situation better, so I was stuck with shows I didn’t really care about much. Well, got only myself to blame. Anyway, these several holiday days were a relief, both from other stuff and from not watching likable enough anime. I’m sure I’ve missed not a single good show, but so far I think only Zombieland Saga and Bloom into You might be something I think could be interesting. But let’s return to stuff I did watch. And by the way, Attack on Titan ended during this season, but 2 episodes isn’t anything to write about, especially since the general quality remained the same as earlier. But enough of that.
