Musings and Reflections – Summer 2018 Week 0

This Winter was exceptionally good – I (and probably many others) had plenty of enjoyment watching Violet Evergarden, Sora yori mo Tooi Basho, Yuru Camp and, very unexpectedly, Koi wa Ameagari No You ni. Apparently, the year had pretty much exhausted its potential as during Spring the only memorable show for me has been Hisone to Masotan, and even it had enough problems not to be among my absolute favorites this year. What does Summer bring? Apparently, not that much, but also not so little. I guess quality-wise it’ll be somewhere between Winter and Spring – there’re some interesting upcoming shows, but, as always, there’s also enough generic stuff. Well, at least the sheer amount of possibilities grant that for anyone there should be at least one likable enough show. I hope. So, what will I watch?

Yama no Susume 3

Remember Yuru Camp? Want more of it? There isn’t any? Don’t worry, there’s a solution that is equally entertaining. To be frank, I can’t say much about the show except that it’s basically Yuru Camp, only it’s focused not on camping but on mountain climbing. Everything else – simply a bunch of cute girls doing what they like. If the fact that it’s already a third season bothers you, don’t worry – it’s a short. The first season had 3 minute episodes, so the amount of the material isn’t overwhelming. Actually, there’s another positive – the show has always been sakuga-friendly. Take for example the absolutely lovely OP of the second season, done by none other than Masashi Ishihama. So yeah, it might seem weird to hype a show that has little more to offer than a feel-good vibe but the educational part, the sakuga part, the comfy part and everything else makes a mix that I can’t refuse to watch.

Shingeki no Kyojin 3

Another third season, what a coincidence! If you haven’t seen me talking about the show yet it’s because I’ve only recently caught up with it. What do I think of it? It isn’t the best thing ever that has happened to anime world but it’s damn enjoyable. I found the first cour entertaining enough, the Female Titan arc was probably my favorite – I marathoned it unexpectedly quickly. The second season brought some problems – everything started without any introduction but all the adrenaline dissipated towards the end leaving nothing but even more unanswered questions, as if there weren’t enough mysteries posed by the first season. Judging from the PV, the third season will at least partly focus on new human characters but I’m not sure if that’s a good idea. The titans are already too mysterious and at least some answers should be given. Like what’s in Eren’s basement or what’s the deal with this giant monkey titan. At this point there’s too much uncertainty everywhere and bringing some more wouldn’t be a good thing, I think. At least Hiroyuki Sawano should do his job just fine and if the level of animation remains constant, all the sakuga fans in the world (myself included) will have a great time. I hope.

Speaking about other stuff, there are a few stronger candidates but everything depends on their initial performance. Initially I thought that Piano no Mori will continue during Summer but apparently the second cour is being postponed until next year. I can’t say I’m very happy about that but judging from recent production values it’s probably the best choice. With that time slot empty, I intend to pick 3 or 4 more shows so that some healthy amount of time still remains for me to clear a bit of my watchlist. I already fidget thinking about Escaflowne. Anyway.

  • Banana Fish – sounds ridiculous, doesn’t it? With Piano no Mori and others there seems to be a resurgence of older manga adaptations. As far as I know, MAPPA doesn’t have anything else that urgently needs working force so the production should be fine if the show doesn’t attempt to be too perfectionistic. An ex-KyoAni director Hiroko Utsumi also sounds like a good deal. Character designs remind me of Naoki Urasawa which is also a plus. So, theoretically all good, but that still needs to be proved in practice.
  • Tenrou: Sirius the Jaeger – I don’t have any idea what to make of the story but seeing Masahiro Ando at the helm of the production and knowing that he’s exceptional at making action sequences (Sword of the Stranger) and, surprisingly, romantic slice of life stuff (Akagami no Shirayuki-hime), I can’t not consider watching this. P.A. Works is a competent studio so everything should be fine. Just tell at least a passable story, please.

Apart from these two there are several other shows that might turn out to be ok. I don’t think that Hataraku Saibou can do much once its educational novelty wears down (though having KanaHana is a clear positive). Island might get problems very soon since adapting a lengthy visual novel never has been an easy task. By the way, the smile of a girl in the poster somehow seems too creepy. Hanebado looks amazing – both character designs and animation are what many shows could wish for but I’m not sure that there’s anything else to it or that the quality will be retained. I’ve yet to start Free franchise, Asobi Asobase seems too mean to be compared to Nichijou, Grand Blue looks too fanservice-y, so that’s that.

What about you? Do you have any favorites already? Am I making a grave error in not paying enough attention to some particular show?

  1. I don’t particularly have any favourites for the coming season. Most of them I have some interest in is within the (?) category such as Island.

  2. I do not even understand how I finished up here,
however I assumed this put up was great. I don’t recognise who you’re but certainly you are going to a
